Not to me. As I read it, I got flavors of Poe in that loopy narrator way, but I was expecting some spectral horror, not the final punchline.

Honestly, I can see where some readers would be turned off by the prose, since any style that is more descriptive than shampoo instructions tends to be labeled purple, but I think a cleaner prose style wouldn't create the same effect.
