The other additional problem with basing a decision entirely on the TPatF is that it wasn't adequately marketed, and didn't have a proportional advertising budget when taking into account inflation, and previous dollar amounts invested into the last really big Disney Princess hit which may have been Mulan? It wasn't released to as many cinemas, it was given a short cinema run in other countries (precisely two weeks in Western Australia), and never given much of a chance to yield results. The proportionate toy push in toy stores (which has always been a big selling point for Pixar and Disney) never happened. Even merchandising wasn't clever. Very little pairing up with Happy Meals. Very little competing with other films at the time or just getting the name of the film out there.

I don't like the direction that Tangled (and Disney) is taking at all, haven't for some time and even more explicitly so these days.

I'll just mire myself in the awesomeness of Studio Ghibli in the meantime.
