THUNDERCATS! HOOOOOOOOO!
Ah yeah, this is looking to be awesome. This video is really the one that got me going, but every version I've found has the embedding dissabled like it was Misery so I found something else. There's also this page which does some design comparisions, has an old CGI trailer when they thought they were gonna make that as a movie. But the best is the fan-made trailer at the bottom, it's very cool the movie melded to get what they did. But anyway, HOLY CRAP!
Even if you weren't a fan, most people at least know what the Thundercats are or were, and at the very least they know of the callout, a rendition of I've kindly greeted this post with. There's going to be the usual moaning of how nothing is new, everything is being remade, classics are sacried (and if you're claiming this, I'd like to steer you to this little video of how strange things were back in the day) but that's not really going to stop this from being a good show, something that kids (granted, mainly boys) can get swept up in and so will their nostaglic parents who watch it with them.
Watching both clips, I like what I'm seeing. There is a huge retro feel to the whole thing; shut up, I'll explain that. Watch the second video again (and again); does that animation really look like something done today? Not the clean lines and sharp colors, but the overall presentation. The angles, the scope, the cinematography, the feel of this show is very much in the spirit of the olden 80's anime, especially fantasy epics like Record of Lodoss Wars. It's has epicness ingrained in it, and it hasn't even aired yet.
Oh, and the original voice of Lion-o is now the voice of the king. Points for throwbacks.
Things like this are why I say remakes are not always a bad thing. Will it be compared to the old, oh undoubtedly, but the thing there is that for as beloved as the original was (in its solid place of cult 80's cheese) it was not like it was totally "good" either. It had many common problems or occurances that were just part of the times, but too it was, as I said, cheese. It didn't take itself seriously, because it wasn't meant to be, it was meant to be entertaining, fun, and action packed with plenty of badly plotted morals, one-liners, and choppy animation. Don't hate it for what it was, that's half the reason it's beloved in the first place. But also don't hate the new for trying to bring a sense of weight to what, as they rightly show, is still a very intriguing and complex story.
I'm really digging the whole sword-and-sorcery feel that's being clashed against advanced technology, it's an excellent way to show why exactly Lion-o and pals are on the run/fight. They eliminated the stupid (and often forgotten) detail of Lion-o being an kid trapped in an adult's body; oh, for those not-fans, the original series had the 'Cats crashland on a planet (Earth) after being attacked. They were in sleep-statis at the time, and Lion-o's was damaged at some point, so he aged (and bulked up) in his sleep. But it's not a point often brought up.
There's also the grandness of the scope of the story. Whether the lizards are slaves or oppressed is hard to say now, but I'm gleaning quite a bit from the few videos I've found. Tygra is (most likely) a captain of the guard. Cheetara is hard to peg down, but seems like a thief or just from the thief class of character. Panthro isn't in any of the promo clips, but based on his picture is wandering warrior rarely in the kingdom proper. Even without checking any offical page, I already know he's going to be voice by Kevin Michael Richardson (it's all in the bald head and sideburns). Snarf I've no clue, I'm just hoping he's not as annoying as he was. Wily Kat and Kit look to be a lot younger than before, but it's hard to say what their place in the show is, except maybe some light comic relief; then again, the real purpose of those two in the original show is up in the air as well. And Mumm-Ra's a freaking badass.
I'm stoked. Between this, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and G.I. Joe Renegades, my inner child is on a sugar rush right now. Not that other new original shows aren't doing it for me either, but these are what I grew up on and seeing them treated with respect in regards to bringing them back is really a plus for me. The new show doesn't start until July sometime, but I'm anxious already.
