4. Tell us about one of your first stories/characters!

Oh, god, do I have to? Uuurrgh, fine, let me think.

There are two that spring to mind; one, probably my first "official" work, was a standard fantasy story I wrote for a seventh-grade English assignment. I forget what the assignment was exactly, but I do remember that mine was seven pages typed, and it was the longest by five pages; it was also the only one of the class read aloud, to my embarrassment. The story was pretty basic, a boy and his teacher travel to some random clearing to practice magic, and the boy turns his teacher into a dragon. You know, how you do. Looking back it was horribly written, I agonized over the opening line and while I was proud of it, it could've been entered into that purple-prose-opening-line contest. Also, while the beginning up to the transformation was alright, I really rushed on the ending, the kid somehow being able to turn his teacher back on his own in much too short a time period.

The second, and never finished, was called The Smoke Dancer. I really have no idea what I was thinking when I started it; there was this dream, with a camp out, then the fire was gone and only smoke, and I did a call back to the title within the first chapter, it, it was not good. I only got a few chapters into it, and most of that was the opening that didn't go at all with what followed, and what followed was some school scene dealing some a bully... I have no idea where I was going with it, I think it was one of those time where you come up with a title and the title overpowers what you're actually capable of handling.

I remember quite a few of my first characters, strangely enough. Most are the creation of a 12-year old boys mind, so it was mainly a lot of monsters and superheros; I remember I created a five-man team for something that never got off the ground. Didn't help that I ripped off the opening of something that I forget at the moment and Gargoyles to create their origin.

The Smoke Dancer I've actually had new ideas for lately. The title was always something I'd liked, even if I couldn't do anything with it for years, but now I think I have something. It feels like a short story, but there's enough there to actually make something of it, instead of just letting it wallow.
