11. A movie that changed your opinion about something
Okay then, let's see. Well, there's no documentaries that have done this; not really any movies, those really shouldn't change your opinion on things given what they are (I still chuckle at all the people whose faith was shaken by things like The DaVinci Code)...
I had hoped to not repeat any movies for this meme, but I've gotta go with Stranger Than Fiction, it did change my overall opinion of Will Ferrell. And mainly because of this scene.
For the longest time I had written Will Ferrell off as one of those actors who, for some reason, is just loved and given work for some unknown reason. He played bit parts for years, Old School being his first real success, and Elf launching him into the Hollywood A-list. And, to his credit, he's been milking it. It's mainly that his humor just isn't for me; or maybe it's the way he does his humor, because I've no problem with stupid humor. But he seems so amazingly one note. His range was from naive man-child to screaming man-child. And various levels of idiot as well. It's a horrible character bit to play, but it worked much better in the lesser starring roles; when he started to play the main character of the movie, that's when he lost me.
I forget how I came to watch it, but I know I rented the movie first, never getting the chance to see it in theaters. But I loved STF, and bought it the next time I was in the store. I was amazed Will Ferrell was not entertaining as an actor, he was damned funny and compelling as one. He actually had depth and nuanace, something lacking in most of his other roles. When he screamed it held emotion, not just the facade of a screaming, whiny child not getting his way. A passive face displayed a spectum of thought and character behind it. I geneuinely liked Will Ferrell.
In this movie. I can love this movie six ways to Sunday, but one movie in a sea of inferior offers doesn't stem the tide. But it shows that, when he wants to, he can put forth more effort than you'd think of him. I just wish he'd do it more often.
